DAY 27 || November Blogchallenge

Do you recognize that feeling you get when you see something imperfect? Something not organised, something not straight in line? If you do, you are most likely suffering from OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The word 'disorder' sounds a bit heavy, I don't want to imply the suggestion that suffering from OCD is fundamentally a bad thing. It can be - if it manifests itself in extremes. But most people will recognize their OCD in a mild form, often they're perfectionists in general. Both my fiancé and I have our own typical OCD habits. Some are the same and other differ. In this post I will share some of my OCD habits, at least the ones I am aware of.

On a website about OCD, I came across the following text:
Most people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) fall into one of the following categories:
  • Washers are afraid of contamination. They usually have cleaning or hand-washing compulsions.
  • Checkers repeatedly check things (oven turned off, door locked, etc.) that they associate with harm or danger.
  • Doubters and sinners are afraid that if everything isn’t perfect or done just right something terrible will happen, or they will be punished.
  • Counters and arrangers are obsessed with order and symmetry. They may have superstitions about certain numbers, colors, or arrangements.
  • Hoarders fear that something bad will happen if they throw anything away. They compulsively hoard things that they don’t need or use.

I think I show most signs of a checker and a counter/arranger. To a lesser extent, I also recognize myself in the doubters/sinners category and even a little bit in the other ones - the washers and hoarders.

Here are some of my OCD-like habits:

* I would feel highly uncomfortable using tableware like this >

* I can't leave the house when my bed isn't made properly after getting up in the morning.

* When crossing a zebra, I have to always walk on the white tiles as the black ones are lava.

* Same with walking on pavement - I have to skip certain tiles to follow a specific path my mind makes up.

* I like walking in a straight line.

* I use desinfective hand gel a lot, as I am afraid of getting infected by something or someone.

* I get nervous when people make obvious grammatical or spelling mistakes.

* I keep opening the fridge and cupboards several times an hour to see if there's any food.

* Some bookmarks I can only use with specific books, like this:

Some of my fiancé's OCD habits:

* He reorganizes the whole dishwasher before turning it on - forks, knives, spoons all separately.

* He is re-reading a lot because he is paranoid to leave out one single word. Sometimes he even reads whole chapters of books again.

* He reorganizes things in shops - like when he finds a product that doesn't belong in a specific shelf, he walk through the entire shop to put it back in the right place.

What is your OCD habit?

  1. Haha this is such a fun post :)
I am probably a bit of a checker, a bit of a doubter and a bit of a counter lol.
I am terrible with the need to tidy everything up right after using something. Also, when I get an idea I have an urge to do it right away. At the same time, I set a bar too high for myself and go full on perfectionist at a project (sometimes it works against me). All cupboard doors MUST be closed at all times haha.
My hubby is defo similar to your fiance. Grocery shopping always becomes an organisation trip, especially when we are at the till lol
So fun to learn these things, they are so funny :)
